We asked for county leaders, and they answered the call in April at NIRMA’s 2023 Spotlight Seminar Series, Investing in Your Leaders.

All told, nearly 400 registered to attend these member-exclusive seminars. While weather-related safety considerations prevented our originally planned stop in Gering, our speakers Pam Bourne and Ashley Connell, both labor law attorneys from the Woods Aitken law firm, were able to deliver their message at stops at Haythorn Ranch near Ogallala, as well as in Norfolk, Lincoln, and Kearney thereafter.

It was a packed 6-hour program covering everything from interactions between FMLA, ADA, and workers’ compensation, to personal accountability strategies to develop a positive workplace culture, avoiding the appearance of unlawful retaliation, and how to handle discipline and discharge in a way that minimizes risks of claims and workplace violence.

All who participated or received the materials are better prepared to lead the way for their counties and agencies, with a stronger working knowledge of employment laws and an improved understanding of techniques to recruit, retain, and coach employees to attain “employer of choice” status.

Here are some of the takeaways, directly from those who attended:

“Loved the advice on change and working with the willing!”

“Word usage and tone affect the way employees respond to information.”

“Great tips on ways to have difficult conversations.”

Remember, continuing education credits may be claimed by highway superintendents, attorneys, district court clerks, treasurers, human resources staff, 911 dispatchers, and certified law enforcement/corrections officers.

NIRMA again extends its thanks to all who attended this year’s Spotlight Seminar Series and to our knowledgeable presenters.
