Member county jail administrators, sheriffs, corrections staff members, county attorneys and county commissioners and supervisors were given an opportunity in February to learn about emerging trends in jail liability and the best practices for reducing liability risks and preventing claims.

NIRMA Law Enforcement and Safety Specialist Terry Baxter and attorney Brandy Johnson of Governmental Law, LLC, presented five full-day seminars in Sidney, Ogallala, Grand Island, Lincoln and Norfolk. Nearly 130 member officials and employees representing 39 counties and other entities attended.

Topics included inmate rights and due process, jail/corrections policies and procedures, considerations associated with outside vendor contracts, PREA compliance, jail misconduct and harassment, inmate medical and mental health, jail deaths and the transportation of inmates. The seminar also included a group exercise that focused on actual claims and litigation NIRMA has been involved in on behalf of its members.

Based on evaluations turn in at each seminar location and from input received following the seminars, attendees felt the information they received was extremely timely and will be helpful as they carry out their job responsibilities.
