It’s a wrap on our Spring Spotlight Seminar Series, Risk Management is a Team Sport. Held at five regional locations during April, keynote speaker Charlie Colon’s message and our team challenge revealed some important risk management lessons. In case you missed it, here are some takeaways:
- Information gaps create risk
When only one person holds knowledge, the entire team depends on their clarity and accuracy. In risk management, delayed or incomplete information can mean missed evidence, weakened claims defense, or preventable losses. - Assumptions derail outcomes
Teams that assume details instead of confirming them often miss the mark. In real-world incidents, assumptions about cause, responsibility, or severity can lead to costly mistakes. - Roles and expectations must be clear
Teams that assign roles—observer, communicator, builder—perform better. The same is true in counties: knowing who should do what, and who communicates with NIRMA makes all the difference. - Communication is a skill, not a given
Sharing accurate information under pressure is harder than it seems. The exercise reinforced why timely, precise, and consistent communication is one of the most powerful risk management tools available. - Culture determines success
Culture shapes outcomes in the workplace. Teams that listen, trust each other, and adapt quickly are more successful—organizations with strong, caring safety and accountability cultures will go far.
In risk management, teamwork is how you win, and the goal of zero losses takes all of us working together – both NIRMA and its members. Thanks to all of the many member county and agency officials and employees who attended one of our seminars – we appreciate your dedication and commitment!
